World Post Day Marked Today

Published:

Today (October 9) marks the 151st World Post Day.

The national celebration to commemorate the occasion was held this morning at the Badulla Postal Complex Auditorium under the patronage of Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

According to a resolution adopted by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), 193 member countries across the world celebrate this day annually on October 9.

World Post Day was first established in 1969, in recognition of the founding of the Universal Postal Union on October 9, 1874, when several countries signed an agreement to create a common international postal organization.

This year marks the 56th National Postal Day celebration in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, postal trade unions announced that employees would report to duty wearing black armbands today, protesting against a recent statement made by the Postmaster General alleging that certain postal employees had fraudulently obtained overtime payments.

The unions also stated that they intend to lodge a formal complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption regarding this matter.
