Starting November 30, 2025, passengers traveling on buses equipped with ticket-issuing machines will be able to pay their fares using bank cards, according to a government decision.
Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake announced this in Parliament, stating that the initiative aims to modernize the country’s public transport system and make fare payments more convenient for commuters.
The new system is expected to enhance transparency, reduce cash handling, and align with the government’s broader move toward digital transactions in the transport sector.
