Supreme Court Grants Leave to Proceed with Fundamental Rights Petitions Filed by Shani Abeysekara and Two Others

Published:

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today granted leave to proceed with three fundamental rights petitions filed by Shani Abeysekara, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), along with former Police Inspectors Sudath Mendis and H.D.M. Premathilaka of the same department.

The order was issued by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Mahinda Samayawardhena, after considering extensive submissions presented before the Court.

The petitions allege that the petitioners’ fundamental human rights were violated when they were arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division in 2020 without reasonable grounds. Accordingly, the petitioners have sought a declaration from the Supreme Court recognizing the violation of their rights.
