First Woman Appointed as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1,400-Year History

Published:

For the first time in its 1,400-year history, the Church of England has appointed a woman to the position of Archbishop of Canterbury, according to foreign media reports.

The role, regarded as the spiritual leadership of the global Anglican Communion and the senior bishop of the Church of England, has been assigned to 63-year-old Bishop Sarah Mullaley.

The Archbishop of Canterbury traditionally presides over royal coronations and other major state ceremonies in the United Kingdom. Her appointment is being described as a historic milestone for both the Church of England and the wider Anglican community worldwide.
