Prasanna Ranatunga Withdraws His Appeal Against Suspended Prison Sentence

Former Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has withdrawn the appeal he filed seeking to be acquitted and released from the suspended prison sentence and fine previously imposed on him.

The appeal was taken up today before a five-judge bench of the Court of Appeal comprising Justices Mayadunne Corea, Kumaran Ratnam, Sashi Mahendran, Damith Thotawatta, and Amal Ranaraja.

During the hearing, the bench granted Ranatunga permission to withdraw his appeal. The court also allowed him additional time to pay the fine of Rs. 25 million imposed on him, permitting payment in installments.

Ranatunga, who once served as Chief Minister of the Western Province, had been convicted in connection with a case where he allegedly threatened a businessman and obtained money in relation to the construction of a land plot in the Meethotamulla area.
