The government has released the list of Members of Parliament who received houses under the Viyathpura Housing Project at concessionary rates.
During the 2022 Aragalaya period, several former MPs had requested the government to grant them the opportunity to purchase houses from the Viyathpura project at reduced prices compared to the rates offered to the general public. Acting on this request, the Cabinet granted approval on July 15, 2024, to provide the houses under a special concessionary scheme.
However, the Urban Development Authority (UDA) has incurred a financial loss of Rs. 92 million as a result of this concession. Consequently, the present government has decided to immediately terminate the scheme. At the same time, it has also resolved that if the 29 MPs who benefited from the concession agree, they will still be able to purchase the houses under the same terms and prices as offered to the general public.
By December 31, 2024, each of the 29 MPs had already deposited 25% of the purchase price under the concessionary arrangement.
