A rare celestial event will be visible today (07), as a total lunar eclipse is set to occur, visible not only in Sri Lanka but also across many parts of the world.
According to Professor Chandana Jayaratne, Director of the Astronomy and Space Science Unit at the University of Colombo, the eclipse will last for approximately 5 hours and 27 minutes, beginning at 8:58 p.m. tonight and ending at 2:25 a.m. tomorrow (08).
The total eclipse phase will be visible from 11:01 p.m. until 12:22 a.m., providing a striking opportunity for observation.
It is estimated that nearly 85 percent of the world’s population will be able to witness this eclipse, either in full or as a partial eclipse.
Sri Lankans will not have another opportunity to view a total lunar eclipse of this kind until the year 2028.
