President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the government’s objective is to identify economic potential, extend economic growth to rural areas, and drive national development through well-planned initiatives.
The President made these remarks this morning (02), while inaugurating the construction of the Vattuvakal Bridge in the Mullaitivu District.
He further emphasized that his administration is committed to alleviating rural poverty during his tenure.
Highlighting future plans, President Dissanayake announced that several new development projects will be launched across the country during September. He stressed that the government is determined to end the longstanding practice of delaying projects beyond scheduled completion dates and exceeding estimated costs, pledging instead to complete all development works on time and deliver their benefits directly to the people.
The Vattuvakal Bridge, located along the Paranthan–Karachchi–Mullaitivu road near the Nandikadal lagoon, currently accommodates more than 3,000 vehicles daily. However, due to the lack of proper maintenance over an extended period, the bridge has fallen into a severely unsafe condition.
Accordingly, under the Road Development Authority, the structure will be developed into a new two-lane bridge at a cost of Rs. 1.4 billion in public funds. The project is scheduled for completion by September 2, 2027.
