Bus unions request postponement of seat belt law

Published:

The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association is urging authorities to postpone the implementation of the law making it mandatory for bus drivers to wear safety belts.

Its chairman, Gemunu Wijeratne, said that since old buses do not have seat belts, it will take time to install them.

National Transport Commission Chairman Engineer P.A. Chandrapala had recently stated that this decision is expected to be implemented from July 1st.

However, the Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association, Gemunu Wijeratne, said that although the law should be implemented, the National Transport Commission does not have the power to intervene in it.
