In line with World Habitat Day, National Housing Week has been declared from October 1 to 5.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place today (01) at the Presidential Secretariat, with all arrangements finalized, Minister of Urban Development, Construction and Housing Anura Karunathilaka announced.

Speaking at a special press briefing held at the Government Information Department on September 29, the Minister said this year’s theme is “A Home of One’s Own – A Beautiful Life.” He emphasized that the key objective of the program is to provide citizens with their own homes and thereby uplift their quality of life.

As part of the initiative, several programs will be implemented during the week, including the provision of housing assistance and ownership deeds. Under the first phase, 2,846 houses are to be vested in the public, while 1,000 land deeds will also be distributed.

Minister Karunathilaka further highlighted that both urban and rural housing development projects are being carried out without harming the environment and with sustainable land use in mind. He added that the 2025 budget has also allocated provisions for housing development.
