Sri Lanka’s Third Nano-Satellite to Be Deployed into Orbit Tomorrow

Published:

Sri Lanka’s third nano-satellite, developed with the technical contribution of Sri Lankan engineers, is scheduled to be deployed into orbit tomorrow (19).

Named BIRDS-X DRAGONFLY, the satellite was carried to the International Space Station (ISS) on August 24 through NASA’s SPX33 rocket mission. It is scheduled to be released into its orbit tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. Sri Lanka time from the ISS.

Sri Lanka first launched Ravana-1 in 2019, followed by KITSUNE in 2022, which was developed through a collaborative international project involving five partner countries. The launch of BIRDS-X DRAGONFLY marks the third nano-satellite project for Sri Lanka, signifying another important milestone in the country’s journey of space technology development.

A notable feature of this project is that Sri Lanka has not incurred any capital expenditure for its implementation.

The BIRDS-X DRAGONFLY satellite is primarily designed to conduct three key space research missions.
