U.S. President Donald Trump has held discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on tightening economic sanctions against Russia, foreign reports state.
Following the talks, von der Leyen announced that the Commission is preparing to introduce its 19th package of sanctions, targeting sectors such as cryptocurrency, banking, and energy.
She noted that Russia’s war economy is sustained by revenues from fossil fuels, which continue to fuel the bloodshed in Ukraine. To bring an end to this, the Commission will accelerate measures to halt the importation of Russian fossil fuels, von der Leyen declared in a statement issued after her call with Trump.
Any decision taken by the European Commission applies to all 27 EU member states. Reports further indicate that von der Leyen’s call came in response to a letter recently sent by President Trump.
