President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has assured that Sri Lanka will not face a recurrence of the fuel and gas crisis that once forced people to endure long queues, during which lives were lost.

The President made these remarks today (17) while inaugurating the construction of six new fuel storage tanks at the Kolonnawa Oil Storage Complex.

The new facilities will include three tanks with a capacity of 15,000 cubic meters each, two tanks of 7,000 cubic meters, and one tank of 5,000 cubic meters.

Emphasizing that the government is working to secure both energy sovereignty and economic independence, President Dissanayake called on the people to extend their support to this progressive transformation.

He further noted that plans are underway to renovate and put into operation 24 oil tanks owned by the government in Trincomalee, with agreements expected to be finalized and executed in due course.

The contract for the construction of the six new tanks at Kolonnawa has been awarded to M/s Indo East Engineering – Ceylex Engineering JV at a total cost of Rs. 3.7 billion. The project, scheduled for a 24-month completion period, is expected to be finalized by September 2027.
