The Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar today (16) ordered that former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and several other accused be released on bail. They face charges of misusing state funds through the purchase of substandard immunization vaccines.
Accordingly, each accused was granted release on a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and two surety bails of Rs. 5 million each.
The court also imposed a travel ban on the accused and ordered them to surrender their passports to the court.
Earlier in the day, indictments were served against them before the Trial-at-Bar bench.
Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama informed the court that the Attorney General’s Department opposed the granting of bail.
However, after considering lengthy submissions made by the defense counsel, the three-judge bench—comprising Mahesh Weeraman, Pradeep Abeyrathna, and Amali Ranawira—rejected the Attorney General’s objection and issued the bail order.
