Sri Lanka Climbs 15 Places in Global State of Democracy Report 2025

Published:

Sri Lanka has recorded a significant improvement in democratic indicators, moving up 15 places compared to last year, according to the latest Global State of Democracy (GSoD) 2025 Report.

The report, issued by International IDEA, highlights this achievement under the “Year-on-Year Ranking Change” category for Sri Lanka.

The progress is largely attributed to the presence of an elected government, greater freedom of expression, and improvements in media freedom. Notably, Sri Lanka is identified as one of the leading two countries in the Asia-Pacific region to show marked improvement in media freedom.

The report further observes advancements in “Rule of Law” and “Personal Integrity and Security,” particularly influenced by the 2024 elections.

Additionally, Sri Lanka ranks within the top 25% of countries globally in terms of “Civil Participation” and “Electoral Participation,” underscoring the country’s democratic engagement.
