Former State Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa, who is in remand custody over corruption charges, has been further remanded until September 19 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka S. Bodaragama after considering submissions made by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and the state counsel from the Attorney General’s Department.
Rajapaksa has been accused of committing an offence of “corruption” under the Bribery Act by unlawfully obtaining Rs. 8.85 million as compensation. The payment had been received after his political office, which had been built on Mahaweli land, was set ablaze and destroyed by protestors.
He was previously arrested by CIABOC and placed in remand custody in connection with this case.
