Five out of twenty samples taken from two containers seized in Middeniya, Thalawa, have tested positive for methamphetamine compounds (commonly known as “Ice”), according to Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F. U. Wuttler.
The revelation was made today during a special press briefing held at the Police Media Division Auditorium.
The containers, which were found buried at a residence in the Thalawa area, contained chemicals suspected to be used in the illicit production of the highly addictive narcotic drug, Ice.
One suspect has been arrested in connection with the discovery and has been handed over to the Crimes Investigation Division of the North Western Province for further investigations, the spokesman said.
ASP Wuttler also emphasized that while Ice is typically a drug imported into Sri Lanka, this case represents one of the most significant attempts to manufacture the drug locally—a scheme that police say they successfully disrupted through timely intervention.
Investigations into the origin and intended use of the chemicals are ongoing, as authorities work to dismantle what appears to be an emerging local drug production network.
