Nepal Bans 26 Social Media Platforms, Including Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp

Published:

Kathmandu – Nepal has banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn, after they failed to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

The decision was made in accordance with an order issued by the Supreme Court of Nepal, which ruled that all social media platforms, whether local or international, must be officially listed and registered with the government.

The government stated that the move is intended to curb harmful and illegal online content and to strengthen oversight of social media activities in the country.

Authorities had earlier instructed all platforms to comply with the registration process within the given timeframe. However, with the deadline expiring the day before yesterday, legal action was initiated, resulting in the ban.
