Supreme Court Issues Notices to President, Prime Minister, Cabinet and 31 Others

Published:

The Supreme Court today (27) ordered that two petitions filed by former minister Wimal Weerawansa and others be taken up for consideration on October 17.

The petitions seek a ruling to annul the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Sri Lankan government and India for the implementation of the Digital Identity Card project for Sri Lankan citizens.

The case was called before a bench comprising Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Justices Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, and Sampath Wijeratne.

Appearing for the Attorney General, Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne informed court that notices had not yet been served on the respondents, including Cabinet members.

Attorney-at-Law Kanishka Witharana, representing the petitioners, requested that an earlier date be fixed for the hearing. Accordingly, the bench directed that fresh notices be issued to the respondents.

Among the 31 respondents named are the President, in his capacity as Minister of Digital Economy, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and several Cabinet ministers.
