Former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon Granted Bail

Published:

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was in remand custody, has been granted bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura.

The decision was made after considering submissions presented by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and state counsel.

Accordingly, the suspect was released on two surety bails of Rs. 1 million each. The Magistrate also imposed a travel ban preventing him from leaving the country.

In addition, the court ordered Tennakoon not to influence witnesses in the case. He was further directed to fully cooperate with the CID and the court during investigations, warning that any failure to comply would result in the cancellation of bail and re-remanding.

The case relates to the attack on the “Gota Go Gama” protest site at Galle Face in 2022, for which Tennakoon was previously remanded.

The case has been fixed for further hearing on September 3.
