Sri Lanka Bar Association writes to President regarding elephant deaths

Published:

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressing ‘deep concern’ over the alarming increase in elephant deaths in the country.

In that letter, they have pointed out that the number of elephant deaths in this country is the highest in the world.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has also drawn attention to the continued killing of leopards and other protected animals in this letter.

The association emphasizes that Sri Lanka’s wildlife is essential to the country’s heritage and economy, especially tourism.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has requested in its letter that an urgent amendment be made to the existing legal framework and has also announced that it will submit its proposals for such legal reforms.

Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka is urging the government to implement short-term amendments to the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance to increase fines and penalties.

The association believes that it will act as an immediate deterrent to the illegal killing of protected animal species.
