Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been arrested after arriving at the Criminal Investigation Department this morning (22) to give a statement.
This is the first time a Sri Lankan president has been arrested.
The former President arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department to give a statement regarding an investigation into an incident in which government funds were allegedly used for a private foreign trip.
It is reported that the visit took place on September 22 and 23, 2023.
It is also reported that ten people accompanied former President Ranil Wickremesinghe on this trip.
Prior to the relevant investigation, the Criminal Investigation Department also took steps to record statements from former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake and former Presidential Private Secretary Sandra Perera.
