New IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya begins work today

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya, who was appointed as the 37th Inspector General of Police, and the first IGP to be appointed to the position of IGP after completing all three stages of the Sri Lanka Police: Police Constable, Sub-Inspector and Assistant Superintendent of Police will assume his duties at the Police Headquarters today.

The relevant appointment letter was handed over to the IGP by the Secretary to the President at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

Deshabandu Tennakoon was removed from the post of IGP due to allegations of abuse of power and misconduct.

Accordingly, the name of Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya as the new IGP was recommended to the Constitutional Council by the President.

It was only after receiving the approval of that council that Priyantha Weerasuriya was appointed as the 37th Inspector General of Police of the country.
