Former Chairman of the Lanka Fisheries Harbours Corporation, Upali Liyanage, has been arrested by the Bribery Commission.
This is on the basis of corruption charges against him.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court later ordered his release on bail.
The magistrate, after considering the arguments presented by the Bribery Commission and the defense lawyers, ordered the suspect to be released on three surety bonds of Rs. 5 million each.
In addition, the magistrate stated that the suspect’s passport should be surrendered to the court and that his foreign travel would be banned.
At this point, the magistrate directed a question to the Bribery Commission officials and asked whether more suspects were scheduled to be arrested in connection with this case.
Responding to this, officials of the Bribery Commission stated that the then Minister in charge of the subject, Rajitha Senaratne, has been named as a suspect and is scheduled to be arrested.
